OBC Cemetery Restoration Project

Old Bergen Church has initiated an exciting restoration project for its historic cemetery. The cemetery dates back to the late 1600’s and is one of the oldest registered cemeteries west of the Hudson River. Many of the founding leaders of Bergen Village and Jersey City are interred within its walls.The current goals of the project include:
- restoring and repairing a number of headstones
- providing markers and interpretation for historically significant individuals
- making the cemetery safe for public use as a memorial garden and park
- improving the beauty and landscape of the space
- adding a columbarium
- opening the cemetery to the public for limited use as a green space
We will hold a public hearing t share more details about our research and plans, as well as receive input from the community.
